Turkey Tracker is a pioneering, interactive Thanksgiving experience, combining live video, text and photo updates and a live turkey temperature graph with visitor submitted photos and live chat. Turkey Tracker uses technology from Ustream.tv, Twitter and Flickr, along with a homebuilt, state-of-the-art Arduino based temperature tracking device, to share every aspect of Thanksgiving with viewers from all over the world.
Last year, Turkey Tracker had 1000 visitors and an additional 14,000 people viewed the video through Ustream’s homepage. The site was featured in the New York Times blog, Mental Floss blog and on the CBC’s As It Happens. This year, Turkey Tracker is raising money for the Oregon Food Bank by accepting pledges for each viewer the site has on Thanksgiving Day. Anyone can pledge by visiting www.turkeytracker.com/pledge. In addition to a live turkey smoking, the broadcast will feature food and drink discussions, an iPod Touch giveaway and a special cocktail presented by Kevin Ludwig of Beaker and Flask, Portland’s 2009 Restaurant of the Year.
TurkeyTracker.com was created by Michael Weinberg and Chris Chen, of Portland, Oregon, as a way to share they and their friends’ decades-old Thanksgiving tradition with the entire world. The broadcast will begin at 10am PST on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th, 2009.
